The OHS varsity girls basketball team had a rough start. Losing their first few games against Cor Jesu, Pattonville, Sullivan and Ladue, the girls put in a a lot of hard work to improve throughout the season.

“Working hard at our practices and always giving our best helped us improve. We also improved when we started playing as a team and coming together,” Hannah Chambliss (11) said.

Winning games against Fox, Mehlville, Seckman, Parkway West, Lindbergh, Northwest Cedar Hill, Marquette, and Rockwood Summit, the team had an eight game winning streak.

“Whenever we started winning it brought up our energy level; we all started working together better and we played more confidently so we kept on winning,” Bridget Costello (11) said.

The varsity team entered districts on Feb. 27 against Cor Jesu. The team had previously played this team at the beginning of their season and lost 57-34. During districts OHS had proved that they had improved throughout the season, but lost again to Cor Jesu 54-52 in overtime.

“The district game against Cor Jesu was the best three quarters of basketball we have played all year. We got a little excited and out of our realm the fourth quarter and that gave us some obstacle to overcome. Cor Jesu also got very hot from the three point line and we just couldn’t seem to get our offense going at the end. The girls played a fantastic game as a team, every single person contributed something to that game and that is what this is all really about,” Bishop said.

The team ended the season with a record of 14-11. Bishop hopes that the seniors leave knowing that they left everything on the court and that the underclassmen will learn from the mistakes, and have the taste for winning next year.
