With contributions from every grade, varsity softball is currently putting up an outstanding season. They went into the regular season finale with a record of 17-4.

The team has been ranked among the top schools in the area all season and could not have done it without the two four-year starting seniors, pitcher Calynn Gicante and third baseman Amanda FitzWillam.

Gicante has had a strong season so far with a batting average of .367 and has hit five home runs. She also has had 45 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched, with and average of 4 strikeouts a game.

FitzWilliam is also having a strong season. Hitting .400, Amanda is leading the team with nine home runs hit, and an on base percentage of .455.

“They’ve been extremely positive. I think they have lead by example, by their actions on the field and off the field,” said head coach Rich Sturm. “With both of them being four year starters they are doing everything that I could possibly ever hope they would do as seniors. I think they’re doing an outstanding job.”

The underclassmen have also made huge contributions to all the success.

Ella Strickland (11) is currently leading the team hitting .458. Following close behind is Lilly Kahle (9) batting .417, and Mallory Pike (10) hitting .409. Madison Rhyne (9) has three home runs and 20 runs batted in.

“Everyone has had a role, from the freshmen to the seniors, everyone has bought into what we are trying to do,” said Sturm. “I think we’re all pulling on the rope in the same direction.”

The girls are closing in on their regular season with a game on Oct.10 at Parkway South starting at 4:15.  Next week begins the postseason and the girls are working towards a back-to back district championship.

“We got that taste in our mouth from winning a district title last year,” said Sturm. “And I know the girls that are back from that team want to experience that again. I think that is the motivation behind everything that is going on here, and obviously we do have a lot of good things going on.”

The girls beat Cor Jesu 8-7 on Oct.18, when FitzWilliam hit a walk off game winning homerun, sending them to the championship game. They play for the district championship on Oct.18, at Rockwood Summit, starting at 4 p.m.
