OHS journalists receive top honnors at National Journalism Convention

OHS journalists receive top honnors at National Journalism Convention

Channel 97 News was one of 10 broadcasts in the nation to receive Best of Show recognition in the Broadcast Program category.

The awards were presented at the convention held Nov. 11- 14 at Kansas City Marriott Downtown and Convention center.

“I have been very pleased with the work the students have produced,” OHS journalism adviser Jeff Kuchno said. “It was exciting to receive national recognition. “

Chloe Ward (12), a reporter for Channel 97 News, was one of four participants to receive recognition in the Broadcast News writing individual write-off contest. Ward and one other student, Faith Wilwerding form Marian High School in Nebraska, were the only students to receive excellent award ratings in this category.

“I’m especially proud of how well our broadcast as a whole has done,” Ward said. “The award I won in broadcast news writing is very exciting, but Mr. Kuchno really deserves all of the credit. He taught me everything I know about journalism. I just applied his teachings and that’s how I was able to earn such a great honor.”

The broadcast class is excited to have earned such a prestigious award.

“I think it is well deserved,” Channel 97 News Line Producer Eric Lehr (12) said. “There are bright things in our future.”
