Senora Meghan King’s Spanish Ⅳ first block students created a wax museum of historical figures from Hispanic cultures on Friday, Feb. 7.

Mrs. King always tries to make Spanish a fun class, and pursues diverse projects. This time, she pushed her students to create a wax museum. The students chose one historical figure in Hispanic culture and created an entire presentation about them.

“It’s fun for them to research and it’s also fun to see them use all of their skills to create this project.” said King.

The students not only dressed like their chosen characters, but they also created speeches that were presented to many OHS students, teachers, and even some parents. The speeches were spoken in mainly Spanish, and explained their figure’s early life, who they were, what they did, and how they impacted the Spanish society.

“It was really fun. I was initially hesitant because I am not a very outgoing person, but I thought it was a good way to explore Spanish. It was fun to dress up, too.” said Katleyn Jackson, a student in the first block class. Jackson played Dr. Antonia Novello, the first Spanish-American woman to become a surgeon general. “She was very impactful, and I want to be a doctor one day so I decided to choose her.”

The museum was presented in the library during first block. In addition to Dr. Novello, other figures included Roberto Clemente played by Nick Kessler, and Frida Kahlo who was reenacted by Mckenzie Montandon.

The students also created props for their showings. For example, Frida Kahlo’s prop was a palette, and Dr. Antonia Novello’s was a medal. These props were home-made using simple materials and supplies, and created by the students’ own hands.

The Spanish Ⅳ students showed their Spanish-speaking skills, and were creative with this project. Not only did many students find this interesting and fun, King also used these presentations as a way for other OHS classes to view the Spanish class, and to convince the students to take Spanish next year.
