Speech and Debate Speaks Out In First Tournamnent

The OHS Speech and Debate team has seen many victories over the last few years. But with the recent graduation of a majority of their team, no one was sure what was to become of the speech and debate team.

Last Saturday, Mr. Edward Taylor took nine students to a pre-season tournament with six of the nine had who have never competed before. Despite all pretenses, all nine members of the OHS team placed.

The placed returners included Ellie Sona (12) and Shaun Lamar (10), who placed 2nd in Varsity Duet Improvisation. Emma Sona (12) took 2nd in Extemp Debate.

“It was awesome because it was the first time everyone went home with a trophy,”  said Emma Sona about the wins on Saturday.

Novices Ryan Westwood (9) and Aaron Mohabbat (10) took 2nd in Duet Improvisation, and Brianna Berggren (10) and Jacob Kujath (9) took 3rd. Olivia Rauls (9) tied for 3rd in Extemp Debate and Ted Bast (9) took 6th.

With the win, OHS Speech and Debate hopes to carry their success into their next tournament on Oct. 4 at Buerkle Middle School.
