“Whenever I discovered peak rock music, I needed people to know I liked that kind of music,” says Macy Bench, a freshman at OHS, who discovered her creative style through rock music and inspirations from different time periods.
Bench’s outfits range in visuals, she has incorporated different styles and uses different inspirations to make her everyday outfits. Bench adds different accessories such as studded bracelets, band t-shirts and jeans. She notes that these are all important pieces of clothing that bring her style together.
“It kind of depends, [my style is] some days inspired by the 80s, some days it’s inspired by the 2000s,” Bench said.
Bench has built up her collection of clothing over the years. She enjoys thrifting, not just for the price, but the experience of searching through the racks for her new favorite pieces to add to her collection.
“I get my clothes from thrifting and my accessories from HotTopic,” Bench said.
Some may be surprised by how quickly Bench was able to get ready. With the amount of accessories and the work she puts into her hair, some may think it would take longer.
“[It takes me] 30minutes [to get ready] maybe. I wake up looking like this,” Bench said.
Although she has faced some negative reactions from different people, Bench does not let that change who she is. She continues to dress the same way and expresses that she likes the way that she dresses because she likes to stand out and show people who she really is.
“[I deal with negative stereotypes] Yes, because people think that I’m really emo and I hate my life, but I don’t sometimes. I’ve gotten very positive reactions with people giving me compliments and negative ones where people would start screaming emo song lyrics at me,” Bench said..
Despite this, Bench plans to continue displaying her unique style.
“[I dress this way] because we need more diversity in this world,” Bench said, “and it would be boring if everybody dressed up the same.”
