Make or break: Freshman year

Freshman year is an adjusting time for many coming from different schools to a huge high school with hundreds of students and classes. The best thing to do is come to school everyday and work hard while you’re here. Freshman year can be intimidating but that is all apart of growing up, you have to take everything for what it is and learn from it. Steve King, head of the guidance department, said “its okay if you do mess up freshmen year you still have sophomore year as a second chance but it would be better to start off strong instead of trying to play catch up.”

At the end of the school year not everyone will pass to the next grade. When you are in a class and you fail you will have to retake the class with a different teacher until you pass to the next class. Here at OHS there are often different grade levels of students in each class so it can be hard to tell if a student is repeating the class. You have to remember that every student learns differently and  when May comes around its your grades and your GPA, so it is up to you to find the best way to earn your good grades.

You may of heard this before,“so whats the big deal with my grades… I’m just a freshman, I have three more years.” The truth is when you graduate your transcript will have the average of your freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior grades and they take those four year grades and average it out. “Its harder to make a significant improvement starting your junior year,” said Steve King. When you apply for colleges at the end of your junior year and beginning of your senior year your grades up to that date will be sent to the college.

All your grades in high school are important because when you graduate your transcript will have the average of your freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior grades and they take those four year grades and average it out. Colleges will look at them so it is important. You should always do your best in school no matter what.
