OHS German student Morgan Allen (11) won an experience of a lifetime that no other OHS students have before.

German teacher Caryn Miller nominated Allen for the German National Honor Society scholarship for a trip to Germany.

And she won.

“I have never nominated a student for the award before, but I figured that if anyone would be able to hold their own in the competition, it would be Morgan,” Miller said.

Allen is the president of the National German Honor Society (NGHS) at OHS, so it was easy for Miller to chose to nominate her. Each chapter of NGHS had the opportunity to nominate one student for the founder scholarship, and Allen was chosen from all of the nominees around the U.S.

“I am so happy to know that all the passion and hard work I have put into this has paid off into this amazing experience I know I am gonna get,” Allen said.

Once Allen was nominated, she had to write an essay about why German is important to her and why she wants to visit Germany. She then had to write a letter to her potential host family telling them about her and what she wants to do if she goes to Germany.

“I also had to have a letter of recommendation, and that process was very tedious,” Allen said.

Allen will spend three weeks in Germany this summer. She will live with a host family and get to experience their everyday life.

“What I am really most excited about,” Allen said, “is being able to experience the everyday things like going to a movie theater and watching a movie in all German.”
